Lydia was born on August 18, 1882 in Saumorj, Russia, a German settlement along the Volga River in Russia.
On January 16, 1897, Lydia married Frederick Remer in Saumorj, Russia. Lydia gave birth to her first child, John, in 1904 (John passed away sometime before Lydia and Frederick left for America). In later years Fred Jr. (1910) and Alexander (1912) joined the family.
In late June 1913, Lydia and her family boarded the S.S. Cincinnati from Hamburg, Germany to Boston MA, USA. From there they traveled to Saginaw, MI. Soon the family grew with eight more children (Jacob - 1915, Otilis - 1917, David - 1919, Edward - 1919, Rheinhold - 1921, Albertina - 1923, Leonard - 1926, and John - 1927).
